2010: Hurricane Richard Bears Down On Yucatan

Hurricane Richard, a category one hurricane, with 90 mph winds is bearing down this evening on the Yucatan peninsula over Belize.

At 5 pm on Sunday, Hurricane Richard was located at 17.2 north and 88.0 west, or about 25 miles south-southeast of Belize City. Movement of the storm was west-northwest at 13 mph.

Richard is slowly strengthening as he makes landfall this evening. The storm is expected to move over the Yucatan peninsula the next several days, and could re-emerge over the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm. The system is not expected to affect the United States.
