Prepare Now for Emergencies Visit Site
Emergency officials now say a total of 71 homes were impacted by Wednesday's EF1 tornado near Peletier in Carteret County. Four of those homes were destroyed.
Dozens of people are cleaning up today after 110 mile per hour winds tore through the neighborhood. There was no advance warning from the National Weather Service about the tornado.
WITN Meteorologist Jim Howard says tornadoes formed from tropical systems like Beryl are very difficult to see on radar. He also says tornadoes that form on the left side of the eye of the storm, as was the case in Carteret County Wednesday, are very rare.
The worst damage was in the Little Kinston Road area where several homes were flattened by the storm. Luckily, there have been no reports of injuries.
This morning the intersection of Little Kinston Road and West Fire Tower Road reopened around 4:30 a.m., as well as power restored to some homes.
All residents are now being allowed to return to their home.
The local fire department will be going out later today to perform a final damage assessment of the area.
Emergency officials now say 57 homes were damaged and five destroyed this morning in one neighborhood near Peletier.

People who live in the affected area will be allowed back later tonight, according to officials. Officials say there is not a time set for those with vacation homes to return to the affected area.

Several roads in the area are blocked off. Those include Little Kinston Road, West Fire Tower Road and Russell Lane.
The Red Cross Disaster Action Team is on the ground in Peletier, going door-to-door to meet with each family affected. The Red Cross is planning to feed some 200 family members and emergency response personnel dinner tonight.
