Red Cross Hurricane App

If you're a weather watcher or just need a little help being prepared for hurricane season, there's an app for that.

The Red Cross has made a new application for I-Phone and Android cell phones that not only tracks hurricanes, but by using GPS on your phone, can find the nearest available shelter.

Summer Woodard with the Red Cross of Pitt County says the app can be helpful, especially if you're caught by surprise this hurricane season. Woodard says, "It'll tell you what shelter's open, what the population is, how many it can hold, if it's full or not, which is really important when it's one or two o'clock in the morning and all of a sudden your home is getting flooded and you're not expecting, where's the closest place to go? It's right there on your phone in your hand."

Woodard says the free app also gives you a checklist of supplies and other useful information.

The Red Cross is also working on an earthquake and tornado tracker app. No word on when those will be available.
