Shelter Opening Its Doors To Pets During Hurricane

County animal shelters want pet-owners to be proactive in preparing for Hurricane Irene.

The Pitt County Animal Shelter says it can house pets if owners are forced to evacuate. Pets must have rabies tags and proof of immunizations, and an identification tag on the pet's collar if possible.

The shelter also suggests bringing clearly labeled collars, leashes, crates and carriers. If the animal is on a special diet they ask owners to provide the food. In order for pets to have the comforts of home, they recommend leaving blankets, towels or other bedding.

Why wouldn't the pet owner just take their pet with them if they have to evacuate?! Killing homeless animals to make room for animals with homes is not only dumb, it is unethical. I would NEVER want any of our puppies left at a shelter! If you care about your animal you will take them with you...you wouldn't leave your child behind at a daycare would you??!!

Hopefully the Pitt County Animal Shelter won't euthanize animals that need homes to make room for these animals that have homes.

I SURE HOPE THEY DON'T HAVE TO DIE SO OTHERS WITH HOMES CAN STAY. THAT WOULD BE TERRIBLE AND UNCALLED FOR.
