Visitors to Emerald Isle saw a strange site on the beach Wednesday. A piece of a plane.

Town officials say plenty of debris has washed ashore after Hurricane Irene, including a piece of an aircraft brought in by the tide-- it's sitting near Pier Point.

The part is about four feet long and two-and-a-half feet tall.

You can tell it's been at sea for quite some time, judging by the barnacles growing on it.

Wires are still poking out of the hunk of metal on the shore line.

The town says this was part of the artificial reef that's installed just along the coast.

They say the strong storms must have stirred it up, loosened it, and the wave brought it to shore Wednesday morning.
