Ocracoke will soon be open to visitors.
Hyde County officials say they will lift the state of emergency from Hurricane Irene at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Ocracoke Island will be accessible by the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter ferry routes. It was the first place where officials issued evacuation orders ahead of Hurricane Irene. It's accessibly only by ferry.
Highway 12 is open and clear from the village to the Hatteras Ferry Docks on Ocracoke, but Dare County has a limited current reentry policy.
Hyde County officials offered some warnings to anyone coming onto Ocracoke Island. First, big swells and deadly rip currents are expected Wednesday and Thursday from Hurricane Katia, though she will stay hundreds of miles offshore. Officials also ask people to be respectful of roadside crews working to clear debris from Hurricane Irene.
Hyde County is one of nine counties where emergency food stamps will be available. People can start applying on Thursday. The locations in Hyde County to apply are O.A. Peay Complex, 1430 Main Street, in Swan Quarter and in the DSS, 147 Sand Dollar Road, Ocracoke. For more information on other county's locations, click here.
