Mandatory Evacuation For North Topsail Beach

Residents of one coastal town in Onslow County are being told to evacuate because of Hurricane Irene.

A mandatory evacuation and a State of Emergency has been issued for North Topsail Beach. That begins at 6:00 a.m. Friday and the town is urging everyone to be off the island by 6:00 p.m. Gale force winds are expected Friday evening.

The town says the DOT will close the high-rise bridge when winds reach 45 miles per hour.

Previous Story

An Onslow County beach town is expected to ask residents and visitors to leave because of the storm.

North Topsail Beach Mayor Daniel Tuman says they plan to ask for a voluntary evacuation at 2:00 p.m. He says as the storm continues they could even change that to a mandatory evacuation for the town as late as Friday morning.

The main route of access for the town is the high-rise bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway. The mayor says when wind gusts reach 45 miles per hour emergency vehicles stop crossing that bridge.
