National Weather Service Will Include New Info In Hurricane Reports

We're more than a month into the 6 month 2012 hurricane season, and so far there have been 4 named storms in the Atlantic. Officials in the east are working to make sure everyone's prepared for the rest of the season with people in the east still rebuilding from Irene's damage last August.

Carteret County Emergency Services and the National Weather Service held a Hurricane Awareness Seminar Tuesday. One change the National Weather Service is making this season is adding the ground level storm surge measurement in their local reports. Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the national weather service in Newport John Cole says it's important for the public to pay close attention to hurricane forecasts.

"Take every storm seriously. There are many, many things that a hurricane or tropical storm can do. Heavy rainfall or flooding is one. Not only the winds or the surge but the tornado threats as well- we had all of these with hurricane Irene last year," said Cole.

The hurricane center is predicting a near normal hurricane season for 2012, with 9-15 named storms.
