Prepare Now for Emergencies Visit Site
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Inmate crews working to clean up debris from Hurricane Irene have completed their task in eastern North Carolina.
The Department of Correction said Friday that in the past week, inmates cleared debris in the towns of Harlowe and Winton and at a state historic site in Halifax County. Department spokesman Keith Acree said the inmates also returned to beaches in Salter Path and Indian Beach and spent an additional three days assisting the Division of Marine Fisheries in removing hundreds of tires from the sand.
Beginning this weekend, the state's 74 medium-custody road squads and 55 minimum-custody highway litter pickup crews will focus on roadside trash pickup during the annual Fall Litter Sweep which runs Sept. 17 through Oct. 1.
