Prepare Now for Emergencies Visit Site
An ambulance wasn't able to transport a man that needed medical attention because highway 12 is still washed out after hurricane Irene. So he had to be taken in by a Coast Guard boat.
A Coast Guard boat crew from Station Oregon Inlet and Hatteras emergency medical services medevaced a 40-year-old man experiencing breathing problems from Rodanthe, N.C., Thursday morning. The Coast Guard and EMS medevaced the man by boat as the road to Hatteras remains closed.
Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders received the call from Hatteras EMS at approximately 2:45 a.m., and after a brief phone conference with an on scene doctor, proceeded to launch a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Oregon Inlet.
"Due to the damage to Highway 12 from Hurricane Irene, local responders were not able to transport the man via ambulance," said Lt. Kevin Sullivan of Sector North Carolina. "Local authorities requested Coast Guard assistance in the transportation."
The Coast Guard medevaced the man from the Rodanthe Ferry Terminal and he was taken back to the Oregon Inlet station and transferred to additional EMS for transportation to the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, N.C.
