Greene County Schools: New Modular Units Can Withstand 110 MPH Winds

Students in many locations are headed back to school just as the threat of Hurricane Irene looms and school officials in Greene County are keeping a watchful eye after the middle school was destroyed in a tornado back in April.

Students at Greene Middle School will be in modular units. Greene County superintendent Dr. Patrick Miller says he's hopeful the hurricane won't cause much damage in the county. He says the modular units are wind-rated for 110 mile-per-hour winds, and says steel anchors drilled vertically and horizontally into concrete piers secure the modular units. Miller says if wind or water damage does occur, the school system would assess the damage and come up with a plan for students.

Because the new buildings are modular units, Miller says the school system will be more likely to have early dismissals or cancel classes if severe weather occurs during the week.

Hoping all will be well with our schools. Staff have worked so hard to bring the middle school back together for the kids. They're doing a great job!

Not to take the glory away, but modular, mobile, homes, and manufactured shelters have to meet the 110 wind code. It is the zone that we are in.

I did not know that myself. Interesting. I was also pondering the fact that it all becomes subjective in this situation anyway... a Category 3 has winds from 111 to 130mph. So those are only designed to maybe withstand a category 2, as long as there isn't pounding debris, I assume. I guess it depends on how close they're parked to the primary landfall area.
