Officials say 2,500 people on Hatteras Island on North Carolina's Outer Banks have been cut off by damage from Hurricane Irene.
Dare County officials said Sunday they will use ferries to take supplies to the island, which is unreachable because of problems on state Highway 12.
Officials said they don't know how much damage the storm caused.
County manager Bobby Outten says no one is being allowed on the Bonner Bridge and three sections of NC 12 are impassable because of damage from the sand and water.
He says ferries will be the lifeline to Hatteras Island until the road damage can be repaired. He didn't know how long that might take.
County Commissioner Chairman Warren Judge says flooding from Pamlico Sound was "epic" in some neighborhoods.
