CURRITUCK COUNTY: Tourists Told To Leave

Currituck County is now under a State of Emergency because of Hurricane Irene.

The county says due to the unpredicted track of the storm, a mandatory evacuation is ordered for all tourists.

They are also recommending that all citizens in low-lying areas and those prone to flooding evacuate or move to a more safe location on Thursday.

Schools in Currituck County will be closed on Friday and because of the State of Emergency all alcohol sales are suspended.

Currituck County recommends that tourists leave in advance of Hurricane Irene. The Dare County town of Southern Shores has also issued a mandatory evacuation for non-residents.

They are asking vacationers to leave no later than Friday and that incoming tourists should consult with their rental agency, and consider delaying their arrival until Monday.

The county says at this time, no evacuations have been ordered for Currituck County and no hurricane watches or warnings have been issued.

Those that do stay behind should have a three-day supply of water, food, flashlights, batteries, radio, cash, clothing, medicines and pet supplies. Vehicles should be fueled in case a full evacuation is needed.

A State of Emergency has been declared by the mayor of Southern Shores. A mandatory evacuation for all non-residents begins at 8:00 a.m. Thursday.

The town says Highway 12 and US Highway 158 are to be used for this evacuation.

Dare County officials are still deciding if they will issue an evacuation order as Hurricane Irene approaches.
