CARTERET COUNTY: Shelter Open

Carteret County opened up a shelter at Atlantic Elementary School at 6:00 p.m. Saturday. Residents are urged to bring their own personal supplies and necessities.

No evacuations are in effect.

Emergency managers say the storm will stay off Carteret County's coast, but heavy winds and rain will impact the county. Gusts from 50 to 70 miles per hour are expected and heavy surf and dangerous rips are likely.

The county says residents should also expect sound side flooding on Monday as the storm moves north.

Previous Story

Carteret & Dare County emergency officials say they're closely monitoring the path of Hurricane Sandy.

While the storm is expected to remain off shore, heavy winds and rain are expected this weekend in Carteret County. Emergency management says residents should plan for prolonged periods of 30-40 mile per hour winds and gusts up to 60 miles per hour. Heavy surf and dangerous rips are also likely.

The county says flooding is also possible Monday along the Pamlico Sound. They say those Down East should prepare for a storm surge between 3 and 5 feet.

Carteret County says portions of Highway 12 could also become inundated by the storm.

Dare County says they expect conditions to deteriorate Saturday afternoon and worsen through Monday.

Strong winds will lead to very rough surf on the Outer Banks, dangerous rip currents, ocean overwash and moderate coastal flooding both on the ocean and sound. Dare County says heavy rain will also occur with as much as 5 inches possible along the coast.

Emergency managers say strong beach erosion and road overwash will be a major concern along Highway 12 from Kitty Hawk to Buxton. Some minor structural damage could occur; however, the most threatening aspect of the storm will be ocean overwash and potential loss of highway along Highway 12 south of Oregon Inlet on Hatteras Island.

Dare County advises all residents and visitors, especially those in oceanfront areas and places prone to soundside flooding, to take precautions.
