Hurricane Irene showed no mercy on one of Carteret County's landmarks overnight.
The pier at the Sheraton in Atlantic Beach received major damage. About 1/3 of the pier collapsed sometime after 3:00 a.m.
The pier was damaged last year by Hurricane Earl, but was repaired. As Irene passes, it's possible more of the pier could be lost.
