BCMC Prepares Hospital, Staff For Irene

Hospitals in the east are prepping for Irene -- making sure they're able to care for patients during and after the storm.

The plant operations staff at Beaufort County Medical Center is testing generators and making sure fuel tanks are topped off before the wind really starts blowing. They were out early this morning checking the roof drains and making sure everything is secure.

All managers, especially on the nursing unit, have been asked to check their supplies and medications to make sure they have what they'll need, and they're asked to get their own homes in order.

"We encourage our staff, especially our essential staff, to go ahead and make their preparations at home so that they are available when the hospital needs them," said spokeswoman Pam Shadle.

The hospital has a written emergency plan and holds drills to make sure everyone knows how to handle different emergencies that could arise.

Unreal- I'm sure that with your case of the sniffles or pain you thought that you were an emergency, but don't become self entitled that you're in an emergency room therefore you are an emergency. I have been to this hospital several times and have NEVER seen a nurse use a phone while in a room. There are staff that have phones so that they can be reached by the hospital at all times as part of their jobs. Maybe you want to take some responsiblity for your care and know who's taking care of you and know if they're a nurse or not next time!

i expect that a lot of the dead weight around there will be gone within90 days of the new owners taking over. Some of them think that they have nothing to be concerned about.I hate to tell them inspite of what's said in the contract some people will be let go and I want to be there to see it.That's why the hospital is being sold because the help is sorry and making big money doing nothing.

Hope the ER is not busy. This would cut into the RN's cell phone time. I had to utilize their services for the first time in 10 years, and I witnessed EMS personnel attempting to talk with a RN about a patient. The only thing the RN seemed to care about was her cell phone constantly going off. 20 minutes later she was texting. Not sure who is in charge of these nurses, but it may be time for a change. Each one of you have huge responsibilties, and being on a cell phone with every room filled up is certainly not responsible!!!!

If you think it so easy, why aren't you doing it.

I wonder if they still have that board member that does not pay his bills?

Have been using this hospital (my wife and I) and consider it to be one of the best. From the front office to see a doctor is extremely efficient, even when we are hurting like H.
