2010: Man Dies When Truck Veers Into Swollen River In Pamlico County

Authorities say a 50-year-old man likely drowned when the pickup truck he was driving veered off an Eastern Carolina road and into a river that was raging because of heavy rains.

Pamlico County Emergency Services Director David Spruill said Dwight Harper was driving on N.C. 304 Thursday about 4 p.m. when his truck went into the headwaters of the Bay River. He was trapped inside.

Harper's body was recovered about four hours later.

Spruill said it wasn't clear how Harper's truck veered into the water. He also said rescue divers needed ropes to avoid being swept away by the swift water.

Earlier, four members of an Atlanta family were killed when their sport utility vehicle hydroplaned near Creswell, went down an embankment and flipped into a ditch filled with water.
