Some residents and vacationers weren't taking any chances in Onslow County and decided to take advantage of the shelters.
Bryant Ramirez decided to take his family to a local shelter to wait out the storm. "We live in a mobile home and we felt 30 mile per hour winds. It freaked me out and we got kids and so we just want to be safe."
Vacationer Craig Smith said he and others decided to go to the shelter as well. "There's four families and we got together and the majority felt that it would be in the best interest of safety to come over here at the American Red Cross shelter."
Shelters were set up at Dixon Middle School, Jacksonville Commons Middle School and Swansboro High School. Jacksonville Commons Middle School was pet-friendly.
No curfew or mandatory evacuations are in effect in Onslow County.
