Update: Overwash from Hurricane Earl still causing problems on portions of Highway 12.
According to reports from the National Weather Service Friday morning, overwash has closed parts of Highway 12 at Mirlo and more than 8 inches of sound overwash in Frisco between Scotch Bonnet Marina and Frisco Marina has made the road in that area impassable.
There are also more reports of more than two feet of water across much of Hatteras Village. There is some minor overwash on Highway 12 at Kill Devil Hills, that roadway, however, is still open.

There are reports of overwash on Highway 12 on the Outer Banks and one viewer sent us the photo proof.

Earlier today, crews were pushing the water and sand off the roadway on Hatteras.
As the storm bears down, those crews stopped work.
But the NC-DOT has equipment staged along the highway and are ready to deploy as soon as it is safe to do so.
