Greg,I wish you much luck in riding out the storm. My family on Ocracoke have rode them out for many years, until health issues and age came upon them. Now they leave just to make sure they can get medical attention when needed.Best of luck to you pal.

gimmeabreak is exactly right, Greg. With great personal freedom comes great personal responsibility. Stay, or go. The choice is ultimately yours. But, as gab says, don't demand that others bail you out if you get in trouble. Just hunker down and ride it out.

Yes, people do decide to stay and ride out storm and that should be their choice. However, if by making that choice it becomes necessary to send in professionals to rescue you, then upon their arrival you should be presented a bill for their services as we the taxpayers did not make the choice to pay!!

To Greg. Stay. NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOU IF YOU DON'T. Why even comment to say you're staying. I don't think anyone REALLY cares!

Hang in there Greg, it's your LIFE, and the LIFE of someone else if they have to go help you in a time of need!

I agree with Lou on this one. Listen to the warnings, officials surely aren't saying it to hear themselves talk.

No offense all, but it is our business when ignorant people dont listen to the evacuation orders, then blame the government for their own stupidity. And BTW our tax dollars pay for your rescue. SO Im gonna have to say, yeah, it is our business. My husband is an emergency services worker, and its because of morons like you that he has to stay behind and cant be with his family.

Just a tip from a Katrina evacuee for those of you who do leave. Empty all the meat out of your refrigerator and freezer. If the power goes out and your meat rots, you will NEVER get the smell out and insurance won't cover a new refrigerator. (USAA will cover the food lost but not the unit itself.) Empty your ice maker and turn it off. You don't want the ice to melt and drain out all over the freezer and then your floor. Put the ice in a big container in the freezer. If, when you come back, the ice is still in cubes, you know the power was not off long enough for the items to have thawed and refrozen when it came back on. If it's one big block, throw out everything because it's not safe to eat. Also, stay in a hotel and eat in restaurants. In a mandatory evacuation or if your home is uninhabitable, insurance will compensate you for additional living expenses for a hotel and restaurant meals (keep receipts) but not groceries or staying with friends or family. Good Luck!
