Tornado Safety Tips

As we continue with unsettled weather and the possibility of more tornadoes through the spring, it's always good to turn your attention to safety. Being prepared for a disaster means planning ahead, and Meteorologist Charlie Ironmonger has some advice.

IF YOU'RE IN A HOUSE:

If you are inside a house at the time a tornado warning is issued, you want to take cover on the first level of the home, in an interior room away from windows.

Put walls between you and the storm if possible.

If you have time, you also want to cover yourself with a mattress or blankets, sleeping bag, or pillows.

Having a helmet on hand for you and your kids is the best way to protect from head injuries.

Many homes in eastern Carolina don't have them, but taking cover in a storm shelter or basement is ideal.

IF YOU'RE IN A MOBILE HOME:

If you are in a mobile home when severe weather strikes, as they are easily picked up and tossed about, it is best to take shelter inside a neighbor's house or a nearby business.

Having a helmet on hand for you and your kids is the best way to protect from head injuries.

As a last resort, you can lay down in a ditch or low-lying area and cover your head.

IF YOU'RE INSIDE A VEHICLE:

If you find yourself inside a vehicle with a tornado close by, you can attempt to safely drive away from the storm at 90 degree angles from where the tornado is headed.

Your best option will be to drive to a nearby business and take shelter there.

And, as a very last resort, you can pull your car over safely, keeping your car running and your seat belt buckled -- that way, your airbags will still deploy in case of an impact.

MAKE A PLAN:

Ultimately, the best chance of survival will be to have a plan in place no matter where you are and to talk to your children about what to do in case dangerous severe weather strikes.
