GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- Strong storms have brought heavy rains and flash flooding to the Triad and Charlotte regions while knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses.
The News & Record of Greensboro reported Monday night that the National Weather Service said 2 to 4 inches of rain had fallen in less than 90 minutes across central and western Greensboro.
The newspaper reported that Greensboro police had closed off some streets, while three lanes of Interstate 40 were closed at about 10 p.m. Some flights were also diverted from Piedmont Triad International Airport.
Flash flood was expected on some roads, creeks and streams, as well as low-lying areas.
At 10:15 p.m., Duke Energy was reporting 6,200 outages in North Carolina, mostly in Guilford and Mecklenburg counties.
The Charlotte Observer was reporting downed trees in Mecklenburg and Union counties.
