Ernesto Strengthens Over Southern Gulf Of Mexico

Tropical Storm Ernesto is getting close to hurricane strength this morning, as it hovers over open water in Mexico's far-southern Gulf coast.

Ernesto crossed the Yucatan Peninsula without doing serious damage.

It's expected to stay close to shore as it moves west, raising the threat of flooding along the coast.

Ernesto had sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph) when it swept over the shore town of Mahuahal shortly before midnight Tuesday and moved into a sparsely populated coastal region.
