Approximately 64% of the United States is in a drought. The drought is now classified as the worst since the 1950s. The Great Plains and Midwest have been particularly hard hit. Overall, rainfall has been below average this year from California to New England. Many trees are dropping their leaves and going dormant months early in the Midwest. The United States Department of Agriculture said that 38% of the nation's corn crop was in poor to very poor condition, compared to 30% a week ago.
