January has been more quite active with tornadoes this year. The total number of 70 is the third-highest in January since accurate tornado records began in 1950. Only January 1999 (with 212) and January 2008 (with 84) saw more tornadoes. Warmer than normal temperatures across much of the United States has likely contributed to the increase in activity. The National Climatic Data Center reports almost 2,800 record-high temperatures were either tied or broken across the nation during January.
