Excessive Heat Watch Issued

The National Weather Service has issued its first alert about the approaching heat wave. A heat advisory has been issued from noon Friday until 8:00 p.m.

An excessive heat watch has been issued for Saturday morning through Monday evening. The combination of hot air temperatures and high humidity will create heat index values between 105 and 115 degrees Friday through early next week with the highest values expected over the weekend.

The hottest temperatures and highest heat index values will occur from the early afternoon into the early evening hours.

Heat of this magnitude can trigger heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The body's ability to keep itself cool can break down when exposed to extreme heat. The elderly and infants are most susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

The National Weather Service has the following recommendations:
wear light colored clothing; drink plenty of fluids; stay in an air-conditioned room; stay in the shade if possible; check up on relatives and neighbors.

Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle with windows
drawn with no available air conditioning. Temperatures inside the
vehicle could quickly reach in excess of 150 degrees within 15 to
30 minutes of direct sunlight.
