So far during month of December, our high temperatures have been above average thirteen days. Considering we are only to the 17th of the month, that is definitely a warm trend. That trend looks like it will be changing with the official start of winter.
A strong cold front with plenty of chilly air behind it will sweep across the area Friday. This is very appropriate as the winter solstice lands on Friday as well. Temperatures won't be unbearably cold, but getting below average has been a challenge this December. If the front continues moving at its current speed, which all indicators point towards that happening, we will see temperatures right around 50° Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Overnight low temperatures Friday and Saturday evening are expected to drop below freezing as well, giving eastern Carolina more of a wintery feeling. We are FAR from experiencing a white Christmas, but the chilly temperatures put us a little closer towards waking up on the 25th with snow on the ground.
