On this first day of hurricane season, some experts say one county here in Eastern Carolina is a big target.
Carteret county is the most likely place in the country to be hit by a hurricane this year, according to the storm experts at the University of Central Florida. They say Carteret County has a 22.4% chance.
With that predication, Allen Smith, emergency management director in the county, hopes folks are ready.
A survey conducted earlier this year by the health department showed a majority of residents can still do more to ready themselves for a major storm. High chances or not, Smith says the county is still preparing for the worst.
The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration is projecting this year a 75 percent chance that the Atlantic hurricane season will be above normal, with 13 to 17 named storms.
