A combination of heavy rainfall and rapidly melting snow left much of western Washington state flooded. The main roads connecting Seattle to the south remained closed through Friday morning. Nearly all highways heading east of Seattle through the mountain passes were also closed. The damage has been extensive as Seattle received 6 to 10 inches of rain over 48 hours. Some homes and businesses suffered roof collapses. The full extent of the damage won't be known until flood waters recede and nearly 30,000 evacuated residents return to their homes. About 1,200 workers from the Department of Transportation have been trying to clear the roads for the past two days.
