The month of September showed extremes across the United States. September was one of the warmest months ever in California while Texas was very cool. Overall contiguous United States temperature-related energy demand was 1.7 percent below average in September. Along with very warm conditions California also had little in the way of rainfall. On the other hand, some Gulf Coast states received considerable rainfall from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Tropical Storm Hanna brought significant rainfall to the Carolinas and Virginia during the first week of September.
