Tropical Storm Gustav weakened on Wednesday after reaching hurricane status on Tuesday. The storm moved over the mountainous region of western Haiti where it weakened to a sustained wind of 45 mph. During the early evening Gustav began to move away from Haiti and should be located just south of Cuba by late Thursday. Gustav should strengthen as he moves over the warm waters of the western Caribbean. Long-range forecasts develop Gustav into a major hurricane by the weekend while he moves into the Gulf of Mexico. The storm could threaten the central or western Gulf Coast by late in the weekend or early next week.
