It's been a soggy spring and summer for much of the Midwest, but no state has been drenched and damaged quite like Iowa. Approximately $9 billion in damage to homes, businesses and farmland. There hasn't been widespread flooding this month, but thunderstorms have repeatedly drenched the state with locally heavy rainfall. Iowa's statewide average rainfall has nearly reached the annual average of 34.1 inches with five months left to go this year. Des Moines has has had 35.8 inches of precipitation this year, which is already over its annual average and putting the city more than a foot over the normal total for late July. The latest thunderstorm last Sunday soaked Des Moines with 1.6 inches of rain and knocked out power to about 14,000 people in the city.
