A strong tropical storm lashed southern Taiwan with torrential rains Friday, causing flash floods and landslides. At least seven people were killed and others were missing when rampaging waters came rolling down mountains. Water supplies were reduced for more than 650,000 households because of flooding. There were numerous rescues throughout Friday afternoon. Weather officials indicated that parts of the south had recorded as much as 44 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. The storm moved west toward southern China late in the afternoon.
