High surf and large swells are increasing Friday evening as Hurricane Bertha slowly approaches Bermuda. The 90 mph hurricane is moving slowly to the NNW at 5 mph and should make its closest approach to the island on Sunday. Early Friday evening the storm was about 300 miles SSE of Bermuda and moving in that direction. Island residents have been buying batteries and flashlights and flashlights over the past two to three days. Bertha formed last week near the Cape Verde islands off Africa, and on Monday developed into a major Category 3 hurricane with winds over 115 mph. The storm weakened later in the week but still carries a significant punch.
