Some heavy spring showers and thunderstorms seemed to show promise of finally coming out of the drought in Eastern North Carolina. For a short while conditions did improve and much of the area was put in normal soil conditions. However, the 100-degree heat of early June and only spotty showers over the last month have taken the area into the "abnormally dry" category once again. The forecast holds little promise of relief over the next few days with only isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms expected. The only relief lately has been the fact that temperatures have returned to normal. That trend should last into the weekend but folks around here know that hot and humid conditions are just around the corner. Maybe when the heat returns again it will bring some showers to help us out.
