Severe Weather Threatens Area

Strong thunderstorms formed on Sunday afternoon causing the National Weather Service to issue severe thunderstorm warnings for several counties. In addition, a tornado warning was briefly issued for Craven County and Beaufort County between 4:30 and 5:15 pm. There were no reports of actual tornado touchdowns although rotation was observed in the cloud by Doppler radar. Heavy rainfall did occur in some locations and by late evening several areas had reported over one inch. Some representative rainfall amounts as of 9:00 pm Sunday include:

Goldsboro - 1.55"
Kinston - 1.38"
Greenville - 0.55"
Jacksonville - 0.37"
Washington - 0.34"
Lake Mattamuskeet - 0.26"
Kenansville - 0.23"
New Bern - 0.17"
