Colorado State University researches, led by Dr. William Gray, are looking at the possibility of increasing the number of tropical storms and hurricanes expected for the 2008 when they update the tropical outlook next week. Dr. Gray indicates that La Nina cool-water conditions in the Pacific and higher sea surface temperatures in the eastern Atlantic are contributing to enhanced conditions for hurricane activity. The average tropical season produces 10 tropical storms, of which 6 become hurricanes. The 2008 tropical season should be much higher when the forecast is released early next week.
