Overnight Storms Packed A Punch

Heavy to severe thunderstorms moved across Eastern North Carolina on Tuesday night giving the area a one two punch of wind and rain. Winds gusted above 50 mph in many areas, including Bertie County where the roof of a home was taken off. Strong straight-line winds were estimated at 80 to 90 mph as the storm moved through that area. Rocky Mount, Washington and Lake Mattamuskeet reported winds in excess of 50 mph while just about every other location ranged between 40 and 50 mph. Heavy rainfall also accompanied the gusty winds and included the following amounts:

Greenville - 1.62"
Edenton - 1.47"
Kinston - 1.37"
New Bern - 1.30"
Kenansville - 1.01"
Washington - .93"
Rocky Mount - .86"
Ahoskie - .85"
Elizabeth City - .78"
Jacksonville - .74"
