A winter storm blanketed much of western North Carolina in snow and ice Thursday morning closing schools and business in many places. Snowfall amounts reached three to six inches across most mountain locations with lesser amounts in the Piedmont. Charlotte broke a record for the date by getting one inch of snow before it changed to freezing rain. Winter storm warnings posted for much of the area during the day was discontinued late Thursday afternoon. Eastern North Carolina received a mixture of snow and sleet early in the morning but the precipitation quickly changed over to a cold rain.
