The first significant winter storm of 2008 will hit western sections of North Carolina on Thursday. As much as 3 to 6 inches of snow and sleet is likely in the mountains before the precipitation changes to freezing rain and sleet. The Piedmont including Charlotte, Greensboro and Winston-Salem, should see a coating to an inch of snow that will give way to sleet and freezing rain icing highways in that area. Eastern North Carolina will miss the brunt of the storm but early morning travelers may face a mixture of sleet and a few snowflakes over interior sections before changing to rain during the mid-morning hours. Stay tuned to WITN-TV for further updates through the day.
