On and off quick downpours will be possible through Sunday afternoon. Heavier rain could bring another 1 to 3 inches of rain to a few locations late Sunday and into Monday afternoon.
Ski resorts in North Carolina are open for business despite what has been a very mild winter thus far. Many of the resorts were able to open for several days from just before Christmas until New Year's Day. Last week was difficult due the very mild conditions and the inability to make snow even during the night. However, cold air has returned and resorts and now able to make snow daily. In fact, snow or sleet may fall across portions of the area on Thursday. More important is that temperatures are expected to remain at or below normal over the next week to 10 days. The mid-term break for many schools occurs during the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday weekend and it appears weather conditions will be great for skiing in the High Country of western North Carolina.
