The winter chill has returned to Eastern North Carolina after temperatures reached the 70s in many areas last week. Afternoon highs on Monday failed to get beyond 50 degrees in many locations. It looks like the cooler weather will remain across the area all week. Highs are expected to hover in the upper 40s during the afternoons with overnight lows at or below freezing on Monday and Tuesday nights. By Wednesday night clouds will increase holding temperatures above freezing and giving the area a good chance for rain. The rain should linger into Thursday evening before the sunshine returns on Friday. Even colder air will arrive this weekend with temperatures by Sunday struggling to get above 40 degrees.
