BOSTON (AP) -- Hundreds of schools are shut in New England as a
winter storm whips snow onto the region, with 11 inches already
reported in one Massachusetts town.
The storm is snapping a period of unseasonable warmth for the
Northeast. Many communities have declared snow emergencies and
Boston's mayor has ordered that non-essential city employees stay
The heavy snow is tying up traffic and slicking up major
highways, causing several accidents and spinouts. Airlines have
been forced to cancel flights at Boston's Logan International,
Maine's Portland International Jetport and Connecticut's Bradley
The heavy, wet snow is toppling trees and power lines, leading
to blackouts for thousands.
Still, the winter hit appears to be gentler than expected in
some areas, where the snowfall tally isn't meeting expectations.
