Drought Tempts Looters

The extreme dry weather over the past several months is exposing artifacts that have long been hidden by water. The bottom of lakes and reservoirs are now revealing Native American pottery, spearheads, and other archaeological items not seen for hundreds of years in some instances. Persons who remove these items from public lands can face stiff fines or possibly jail time under both federal and state laws. Evidence of unauthorized looting has been found in the dry bed of Falls Lake north of Raleigh.
