Storms bringing heavy rain and snow are lashing the West Coast of the United States. For the most part the storms are good news for the state. Since July 1, California has received 61% of its normal precipitation, a worrisome sign for state water managers after the state had its lowest snow pack in 19 years last winter. Reservoirs were at 83% of average for for the year on December 1, compared to 121% at the same time last year.
Southern California was benefiting from this week's storm. The region received rain Tuesday that prompted flash flood warnings in areas burned by wildfires this fall. For skiers the heavy snow has been a dream come true. Many vacationers for Christmas are finding some of the best skiing conditions in several years in the West. Several feet of snow can be expected at higher elevations over the next few days.
