Significant rainfall finally fell across Eastern North Carolina over the weekend. Rainfall amounts were generally above 1 inch with several locations having as much as 3 inches or more, especially along and near the coast. The storm system responsible for the rain has left the area and dry conditions are expected for the next few days. North Carolina remains in the grip of an exceptional drought except for areas along and east of Highway 17. Those areas are experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions. Regardless, rainfall amounts this year are 10 to 20 inches below normal even for areas along and east of Highway 17.
