Winter Storm Pounds Pacific Northwest

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Authorities are reporting flooding,
mudslides, closed roads, downed trees, power outages and at least
two deaths in the Northwest.
A storm that has generated hurricane-force winds and heavy rain
is to blame. States of emergency are in effect in Washington and
Oregon. Transportation officials in Oregon are warning drivers not
to attempt passage through the Coast range.
Two people in Washington have died. And there have been
helicopter rescues have been launched for stranded hikers and some
homeowners trapped by flooding.
The National Weather Service has recorded wind gusts of more
than 100 miles per hour along the Oregon coast.
