Hundreds of flights canceled because of winter storm

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- As a winter storm rips into the Midwest,
officials have canceled hundreds of flights at airports in Des
Moines, Chicago and Milwaukee.
More than 400 flights were canceled at O'Hare International
Airport. Officials decided to close Des Moines International
Airport for several hours after a plane slid off a taxiway. A
second plane slipped off the pavement at a Madison, Wisconsin,
airport. No one was hurt in either incident.
In North Dakota, snow has caused numerous traffic accidents, one
of which involved a dozen vehicles including a bus. A highway
patrol captain says cars are "bumping into one another like
pingpong balls out there."
The treacherous weather is even taking a toll on presidential
campaigning. Both Republican Mitt Romney and former President
Clinton, who was planning to campaign for his wife, have had to
cancel appearances.
