Hurricane Brushes Area On This Date In 1888

On November 26, 1888, the ninth tropical system of the season moved toward and then brushed the North Carolina coast as a Category 2 hurricane with winds near 100 mph. The storm developed north of the Leeward Islands and then moved WNW to very near the North Carolina coast on November 25th. The next day the storm turned north and northeast just brushing the Outer Banks and eventually hitting extreme southeastern Massachusetts as a Category 1 Hurricane.
