RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A new federal map shows that the drought is
spreading and intensifying across North Carolina, and Governor Mike
Easley reminded residents to continue conserving.
Drought conditions in 56 counties are now classified as
"exceptional," the most intensive of the four categories of
drought. Last week, 25 counties were considered in exceptional
drought.
Easley reminded residents to conserve "aggressively" between
now and the new year.
More than half of the state's population is now under mandatory
water restrictions, such as bans on irrigation.
Meteorologist Jason Beaman with the National Weather Service in
Raleigh says there's a 20 percent chance of rain Sunday. There's a
better chance Sunday night and Monday.
